Elder Abuse Checklist: Ensure the safety of potential victims and/or witnesses Ensure the victim(s) receive necessary medical attention Obtain a signed “Medical Release” from potential victims Document the scene. Take photos of scene and upload in evidence.com In the event of a suspicious death, the incident must be considered as a potential homicide The handling officers should ensure that interviews are conducted for each alleged victim, witness, and suspect who is available at the time of the response Caretakers should be interviewed separately, recognizing that in some cases, the caretaker is the suspect If the victim has cognitive or communicative disability, contact a “qualified” interpreter. The DA’s Command Post, Superior Court has roster for these services. If victim is unable or unwilling to conduct or continue an interview, the officer should stop the interview and make a good faith attempt to contact the on-call Detective and/or a qualified investigator through the DA’s Office Elder Abuse Unit or Victim Impact Program to arrange a collaborative interview at a later time. Offer the victim an Emergency Protective Order (EPO) (DA Command Post) If EPO is issued and order prohibits the restrained person from possessing firearms, research if the restrained person has firearms and seize if applicable. If crime targeted the victim because of age or disability, consider whether or not it classifies as a “disability bias” hate crime. Make an arrest when feasible or submit the investigation to the detective bureau to obtain an arrest warrant. Notify the Adult or Child Protective Services when officer determines that abuse has occurred.
